Preventing Dental Implant Failure

Dental implants are one of the most successful implant-in-bone procedures, with a success rate of 90%, according to current studies. One of the biggest aspects of success in dental implants is having them done by an experienced, highly-trained dental professional who understand the intricate processes and types of dental implant systems. The best dental implant specialist has advanced skills to diagnose the ideal dental implant option for each patient. However, once the dentist places the implants, it’s up to the patient to help ensure success.

When dental implants fail

The most common cause of dental implant failure is an infection. An infection happens when there’s too much oral bacteria in the gum tissue around the dental implant. The resulting inflammation from the infection can find its way down into the implant rod and then attack the jawbone supporting the implant structure. It’s possible to resolve infections with prompt treatment, but if the infection escalates, it can require the removal of the implant until the area heals completely.

Additional causes of implant failure

Poor oral hygiene is usually the main cause of an oral infection that may lead to implant failure. Other factors that can reduce the success of dental implants include tobacco use, diabetes, and teeth grinding. Teeth grinding or clenching (called Bruxism) leads to a higher risk of implant failure as a study indicated that 29% of bruxism patients experienced dental implant failure. A similar percentage of failure occurred in patients with diabetes.

Preventing implant failure

When the dental professional placing the implants has less than 5 years of experience, the implant failure rate can be higher. Choosing an experienced doctor for dental implants is the first line of defense against implant failure. Other ways to prevent failure include improving oral hygiene and overall health, treating bruxism and quitting tobacco use of any kind. In an ideal situation, successful implant placement allows patients to save money and time as they enjoy their implants following treatment without complications. Great communication with the implant specialists and follow up appointments to address any concerns ensure that dental implants last a lifetime without failure or the need for replacement.
